What are you reading?

February 16, 2008

Books

I have a friend named Deb who “has tagged’ me to do a book “meme” and while I don’t usually do these things,  I like the idea of doing one for books so I’m going to go for this one.   Deb, only for you would I do this I think.  :)

I am supposed to post the rules so here they are:

Rules:

1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages).
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five people.

I am sitting on a couch and I have literally hundreds of books behind me but I do have one on the table by the couch that is named: “The Mystic Heart” so I’m going to use that one. It’s a book by a man named Wayne Teasdale who has pretty much traveled the world studying different religions and spiritual practices and he thinks the we are coming towards an age of something he has termed as “interspirituality” which I am seeing as a sort of a melting pot of different religions and spiritual practices since many are very much the same or have many of the same qualities.

Since I’m not a good rule follower, I’m looking in this book here which I have only skimmed at this point but pretty thoroughly and I need to include the fifth sentence I think in order to put the rest of the sentences in context. So here goes:

In the fifth sentence he says:

“I call the tendency to judge others as an act of projection.”

The next three sentences are as follows:

1. “I don’t use this term in the psychological sense, but in a purely spiritual context.”
2. “Instead of attending to their own inner work, judgemental people are actually doing another’s “work”; they are projecting outside themselves, imputing motives or intentions on others, as if they know the others’ hearts.”
3. “The spiritual journey only begins in ernest when we no longer experience the need to judge others, when we begin to take responsibility for our own inner development.”

There now! I’ve done it!!

As with all memes, I’m going to say that it’s totally optional to do these but in the spirit of trying to follow the rules somewhat, now I need to tag five more people and …. hm ….

1. Lady Luck (since I know she’s a big reader)
2. Dear Dawn (because I know she needs more to do) :)
3. MusEditions (since I really want to know what she’s reading.)
4. Carol For Peace (since I bet she’s reading something interesting too)
5. CeeQue (I’m not sure he’s a big reader but if he does, I am sure it’s something good)

If anyone else would like to participate, please do let me know because I am facinated by what people read.

Thanks for pulling me out of the shadows Deb. I kow I just said that on your blog but it’s a fitting term so here it is again. It’s funny because when I speak with my sister - almost every single time we each ask each other what we’re reading. I do love talking about books.

Thanks Deb and thanks to everyone - just for being you.

Hey Sweetie! I actually received this meme and did it already. But, because I do love this one and I think that books are the best thing humans invented, I will do a variation of it on my blog today.

    Thanks for thinking of me!

The lines from your book are really good. And true. Thanks for sharing them!

CeeQue I think “memed” is the right term and I bet you’ve got some very interesting books. And hey, if you can find a 123 page comic, feel free…

How am I feeling? I’ve been feeling fuzzy-minded and my seeing has been fuzzy as well - other than that, my spirit is rather up these days and I hope yours is getting to be as well.
    Peace and love back.

Martha, I wanted to tag you because I just KNEW you had to be reading something interesting (although I don’t know where you find the time) and I’m so glad you jumped in there and took part.

Actually I wanted to tag everyone on my blogroll because I’m always interested in what folks are reading.

The book you chose sounds like a great read and I’m putting it on my list that I keep in my purse for those days when I’m at a thrift shop or even a book store. It’s a big list but I’m working through it.
Your spelling did have me worried there…I’m glad you made yourself clear in the post afterwards! I do hope you’re having a lovely day.
    Namaste.

Dawn, I was rather amused myself and thought boy, she’s going to be shocked after all this time and all my serious-ness. :) I hope to get by soon to read it. Thanks love. Peace.

DebDear, It’s a very heavy cerebral book and I’m wading through it although I’m finding it interesting as well.
Thanks for tagging me with this one this time - really. Peace and hugs to ya Deb.

KayLee2, Thanks for stopping by KayLee - I hope you’re taking care of yourself. Hugs!

MusEditions, Yay! Thanks and thanks again. The book I mentioned…see my response to Deb here.

Glad to see you, peace today.

Itsallabouthallie, Glad to see you too and I am going to make a point of stopping by. Have a lovely day! Peace.

Sorrow, I’m not big on these “memes” and “awards” as anyone can tell you but this was a perfect one for me. (I’m wondering now what book YOU’RE reading?) Peace today.

Hawk, It is - are you reading anything interesting? Hey, nice to see you. Peace.

  19. Carol Says:

Ruby, ya just never know… Because you tagged me, I pulled the book of Hafiz poems off the shelf. Today I was inspired to read through it again since I had it out, and in it, I found just the medicine I need for my day.

    Thanks!

I love any meme or other inspiration that gets me and others to read! The quote from the book you chose is quite wonderful and thought provoking. Now I think I’ll have to go buy the book and read it all the way through. Thanks!

As a result of you tagging Muse I have now been tagged with this meme too. I’ll get my contribution posted later tonight.

  22. Things_falling_apart Says:

Hello. I am not really sure what the purpose of this endeavor is but I thought I would join in anyway (even though I do not blog [what an ugly word].)

The closest book to me is a copy of the Bible, and as most of you know, page 123 is not far enough into it to be out of the fairy tale section , so I thought it would make for some good quotes. However I was wrong, the quote is terrible. Anyway, here is the 5th to 8th sentence on page 123 of my copy of the Bible (NRSV of course) from Numbers 5:

27 - When he has made her drink the water, then, if she has defiled herself and has been unfaithful to her husband, the water that brings the curse shall enter into her and cause bitter pain, and her womb shall discharge, her uteus drop, and the woman shall become an execration among her people. 28 - But if the woman has not defiled herself and is clean, then she shall be immune an be able to conceive children.
29- This is the law in cases of jealousy, when a wife, while under her husband’s authority, goes astray and defiles herself, 30 - or when a spirit of jealousy comes on a man and he is jealous of his wife; then he shall set the woman before the LORD, and the preist shall apply this entire law to her.
31 - The man shall be free from iniquity, but the woman shall bear her inquity.

    Take care.

  23. PicsieChick Says:

What a great sounding book - and fabulous words for me to ponder! Thank you, RubyS!

The closest book to me will have an interesting quote I’m sure…. Here it is:

“And they made me the way I am, they made me like this.
Jesus, it’s such a hassle to go out nowadays.
I can’t walk down the street or go to the store without being surrounded by fans, wanting to talk, or wanting my autograph or to come home with me.”

    The book?
The Heroin Diaries by Nikki Sixx

Yes, it has a happy ending. :-)

    Hugs and butterflies,

    Hey Ms. Ruby,

    Hope you are doing well.

What am I reading? Right now Core Content Review. And for the last quarter century I have been the only cat in town to read the “New England Journal of Medicine” and “Bluegrass Unlimited” cover to cover every month!

In the big league, I still like Mark Twain, Shelby Foote, and Thoreau.

In the minors, well, I hope someday they’ll know of Tommy Bibey, but if they don’t I’m still having fun.

Find you some good music, kick up your ruby shooz high heels and, as we say in bluegrass, have a good’un.

  27. Lorri Says:

I’m reading anything and everything I can get my hands on. The list is much too numerous…as I am reading several books at once, along with newspapers and magazines. LOL.

But, this is a fantastic blog entry!

Much love, hugs, kisses, peace and books!

  28. paul Says:

There are an awful lot of books out there(Emphasis on the awful), however, amongst the many i have read “The power of now”, really is something special and cuts through the usual fluff and gets straight to the point.
Another more advanced read is a book called “Maps of the mind”, i loaned this to a friend who is a psychiatric nurse and it nearly blew his mind as he couldn’t understand it. I guess you have to be at least partly nuts to understand it. Whoops.

  29. RubyShooZ Says:

Carol, Isn’t that nice when you get to pull off those old books for whatever reason and get caught up in them and find what you need? Glad to hear this worked this way for you. (I still wonder what you’re reading though.) Peace today.

BabyChaos, Well then, what *are you reading? Cheers!

Joyfulseeker, Welcome! I’ve never seen one like this one before so I was glad to be picked. If you do go out and buy the book I quoted from, I’d love to know what you think of it - I’m still not sure what to think. Peace.

Things_Falling_Apart, I agree, “blog” is an ugly word. I don’t know what to say about the quote so I guess I’ll just keep quiet on that count. Hoping all is well with you - really - been thinking of you lately. Hope to hear from you via email soon.

PicsieChick, It sounds like an interesting book - now I’m sitting here wondering if I should know Nikk Sixx. Peace and hugs and even butterflies for you.

Dr.B., Hey Doc, what’s up? (Sorry, couldn’t resist)
Those first books you mentioned didn’t quite fit my fancy but I do love Mark Twain. I’ve never read any Shelby Foote but long ago I loved Thoreau as well, prolly still would.

Hoping all is well with you and your’un. TC. Peace.

Three random sentences can be inspirational! « Joyfulseeker’s Weblog, Thanks for doing this, much appreciated. Hope all is well w/you. Peace today.

Meleah Rebeccah, A published poet? Yay!! That’s not an easy thing to do, I know. (not that I’ve ever tried or ever would) Good for them though and I hope you enjoy it. Have a beautiful day.

Lorri, I always wonder how people can read more than one book at a time - it would leave me very confulsed.

Much much love to you, been thinking of you today. Hugs!

Paul, Welcome Paul. I’d agree, many are awful but there really are some good ones here and there - prolly lots of them actually. “Maps of the mind” really does sound interesting but hey, my mind was blown long ago so I might be safe reading it. Glad you could stop by. Peace today.

It was from a lovely book written by a friendly webloggers, sister in law.

FINALLY getting through that stack of books on the nightstand. But *chuckling* it’s taken a couple feet of snow to make that happen.
We’re getting another 6-8 inches today, btw.
Better grab another one from the pile! LOL

    *sending germ free hugs*
    (stupid flu found me…….ughhhhh…… ;)

  32. RubyShooZ Says:

LorriLove, Huge hugs, lots of love, and piles (?) of peace to you, with you. (been thinking of you a lot) Shining star, keep blazing.

MelDearHeart, I’m assuming you meant “germ free” - ? Durn girlie, you’re another I’ve had on my mind quite a bit this last week. I guess I’m gonna have to come out there and check up on you … I could bring you some nice soothing “Mommy soup” but I don’t have a snowmobile or snowshoes…and the saint bernard wouldn’t work for you I spoze…

At least you have books! I have books but have gotten to the point where I’m considering reading a Louis L’Amour that I picked up while in a laundromat quite a while back - I’m a bit desperate in the book department but here, there is always something to read.

So…what did you read? People want to know!

I do hope you get to feeling better soon. I really can identify bigtime you poor thing. I’m hoping on coming by soon.

    I love you Mel. (((((((((Mel)))))))
I’d risk germs or even gems for you love.

  33. mel Says:

Oh, it’s a wonderful book— “A handful of Earth–a journey of healing and growing” by Barney Bardsley.

Lovely English gal with a hard but wonderful journey to healing from the loss of her husband.
Hard read–cuz it’s so close to home at times, but well written and heartfelt.

    Have you met Mig?
I think that’s what made the read so worth the (at times) trudging through…..

    *spraying germ killing spray* :-)

Not quite there, yet……but there’s definitely improvement!

    (((((((( RubyShooz )))))))))))))

    Be safe, stay well, eh?

The newest edition of the W magazine. Does that count?

  35. RubyShooZ Says:

Mel, The name of the book sounds good but it sure does sound like some hard reading to do - The name of the author sounds familiar for some reason and somehow looks British.

I’ve seen the name “Mig” but never clicked any further to find out I’m pretty sure - maybe I should do that if I could ever find the time. It’s amazing how much time I have but don’t really have - it keeps slipping, slipping, slipping…

Hugs as always - still looking for that window of time to get to visiting just the regulars …. although who is regular … I dunno but I do know you can’t count me in that group.

    Always love.

Meleah Rebeccah, I’m so out of it - does “W” stand for wordpress? (Yeah, I’m goofy but seriously don’t know!) Hope you’re having a lovely day Meleah. I think of you often there at your folks house…

Peace to you today and every day. Hugs too ’cause you’re nice.

I know a horrible thing for a writer of such verbosity as myself.

Usually if I have something to say I will say it but this time it is your forgiveness I must ask for because I know a kind word is worth more than the most wonderful of replys. I am so sorry for not recently offering that word, yet I do offer words about you to the One who created all things.

I’ve not been posting so there’s really been nothing to comment on and that’s on me. As I said before, I’ve wanted to write here but I haven’t. I really haven’t commented much of anywhere either except once in a great while.

I still care a great deal about the acquaintences I’ve made here in the blogging world - I just haven’t known what to say anymore.

My Book is Journey to Enlightenment by Ross Bishop.
    P.123-lines 6,7,8;
Here is how it works: As you begin to move from a place of greater compassion and self-love, your soul alters the intensity and direction of your future experiences. So, you do have an effect on what is going to happen, but it is not as direct a relationship as you might have thought (or desired). Complicating this is the residue of your unresolves (painful) past-life experiences that will also get in the way until they are resolved.

But however untypical of Roosevelt’s temperament, the speech accurately reflected theories of history and economic principles that FDR had repeatedly heard discussed in his evenings with the Brain Trusters.”

Martha, It all started with this question of yours Martha. A simple question.

    “How are you Nora?”

I’ve been frozen, caught in a net, um, it’s hard to explain because I’ve been in a million spaces mentally since you asked and I’ve asked myself the same question over and over and am still not sure. I think my next post will have some answers.

I’ve been considering my next post quite carefully so for now I’ll answer that I’m here, I’m thinking of you and being grateful that you are thinking of me as well.

Wishing you a wonderful day, night, whatever, whereever.

Gaizabonts, My friend, I feel honored that you’ve stopped in. I’ve missed your thoughtful writing and I know it’s my own fault for having stayed away but I’ve just not been able to read and keep up with the blogs as I used to.

I went and looked at your “meme” and thought wow, that’s a really, really good one and it sure gets one thinking. I’m glad though that I wasn’t tagged/picked on. :)

Missing you - Peace my friend.

OceanShaman, Wow! Talk about honored and now honored doubly! I am very glad to see my wayward friend. Since you’ve been freed I haven’t seen you here and it actually brought tears to this terribly sensitive girl.

I loved Mists of Avalon when I read it although I’m not sure I’d read it again - I’ve gotten into a habit of not reading books over and over but for some I’m willing …. like Siddartha…I’ve read that several times and might just do it again.

I’m not sure I’m going to read “A New Earth”. I don’t know why but I’m getting a feeling it’s one of those things like “The Secret” and almost cult-like and I don’t even know why. I guess I should investigate.

Hey, do come back. I’m going to try and get to you again - you’ve touched me so many times with some of the readings you’ve chosen for your blog; thank you! Always love, always peace.

Surface Earth, (smiling) You can try but my shoes are the only ones that will magically take you to…ugh, Kansas! (Actually, I like Kansas pretty well although it really is as windy as advertised.

Peace my friend - along with the hugs and light.

Totaltransformation, I dunno, it sounds pretty interesting to me…but I’m not the one having to read it.

Hey, I checked out your blog and saw those pics of you and all I can say is WOW, keep up the good work! Peace, have a beautiful day.

Robin Andrea, Hello, hello, I AM here and what’s become of Ms. RubyShooZ? Well, it’s a hard question, really.

I’m going to devote an entire post to it as soon as I can which man, I hope can be very soon because I feel very remiss in not having posted or been around.

I’ve thought of you often and wonder if you are still wandering the beach like lucky ducks.

    Much peace and love.

    To everyone,
Thank you for caring. Thank you for coming by. Thank you for thinking of me enough to show it via your words.

Your care, love and concern are truly appreciated and reciprocated.

    Peace, love and understanding.

  59. RubyShooZ Says:

Dharmabum, Hey, hello. Most excellent to see you. No, it’s no one’s fault. Perhaps it’s just the season and maybe no one is reading too many blogs lately, I’m not sure. I know a few folks who’ve stopped writing as much too so … ?

I do hope you are well and perhaps now I’ve had this little reminder I’ll be stopping in to see you as well.

    Peace always.

Martha, Aw, I’m glad you’re there too. Actually, I’m not a big tea drinker at all - I’m an all-coffee drinker but I come equipped with coffeepots, coffee-grinders, and thermoses when necessary. I do however, look forward to those muffins.

Thanks so much Martha. Much love and many muffins.

  60. Mel Says:

  69. RubyShooZ Says:

Mel, Mmmuffins! Never listen to the weatherman - I don’t. I just look out the window and/or poke my nose out the door and take what comes as it comes.

Greetings yourself my friend, I’m hoping all is well with you and hey, you’re being thought of often as well. I have been sending warm vibes your way - I do hope they’ve come through. Much love and always peace.

Coffee Messiah, Hello hello. You sure are a traveling man; always off to somewhere or coming home from somewhere. I’m not envious at all. I very much enjoy staying right here in my nice warm house cuddled up with a purring friend and good books.

The books you mention sound rather interesting. I’ve already made a note of them on my books list for when I visit a bookstore which might not be for a while yet but I do go on down that list when I get the chance.

    Wishing you peace today. Love.

Dawn, I’ve been awaiting that check and it’s been worth waiting for. Always so glad to see you and feel the connection. Much love and always hugs.

Loving Annie, Happy day to you too love. I hope all is well with you and yours. You always come with such a sweetness it does touch me deeply. Thank you for coming back always - Much love to you and yours and I wish you peace and love today and everyday.

HajjiDear, I’ve thought of you often and of your new grandbaby as well and I hope all is well with you and yours. Much love and you know - Huge hugs.

Kaylee, Aw darling, I’ve been thinking of you too and I’m so very sorry to hear of your pain. Please know that you’re in my thoughts and that I care. Gentle hugs.

MelBaby, Happy Easter to you too. I do hope that you’ve found yourself some chocolate goodies and/or had a loverly day today.

Bah!! The winter isn’t over yet - it hangs on good and tight around these parts but it hasn’t been too bad like in the olden days. I hear you’ve had quite a bit of it and I imagine you out sledding…have you been? It’s the best way I know to get through the winters.
Nice warm blankies for you love. Peace.

Eric! Hello! I’m very glad to see you. I know how the not posting can be sometimes as you might have noticed. I’ve thought of you and wondered what was up with you often and hey, I love Larry McMurtry usually. I read that one but forgot if I liked it or not…. (yes, bad memory indeed!) I recently read Pretty Boy Floyd by him and I liked that one. There have been a couple though that I didn’t like but I can’t remember which ones. :)

I do hope all is well with you. You’re another one I’ve been sending good vibes off to and I’m sure they must have reached you. I hope to be by sometime but I am not sure when. I’ve had some troubles on my end here that have kept me rather - off. Wishing you love always.

Lorri, I wish you the same my friend and you’re another I’ve thought of quite a bit recently; I do hope all is well with you. Write and let me know iffen you like and/or have time.
Much love, lotsa hugs and kisses too my friend. Peace, serenity and love.

  70. Gledwood Says:

Flying books?…. I used to have a book ON levitation. Thought it might teach me to hover down the shops. No such luck. Traded it in for 40% of new value at student union bookshop in the end…

Righty ho that “meme”… to complexicated for me… I’m WRITING a book that is taking all my spare NRGs:~~ yeah!

  71. RubyShooZ Says:

Gledwood, Sure, why not flying books? Unless they’re flying directly at us, then it’s time to duck!

Nice to be able to re-sell books that aren’t for us. I probably should do a weeding job on the books but I just don’t have the heart to - except for a few I would be glad to be rid of.

I have been known to give about 15 boxes of books to a local library but I don’t know how many folks would be interested in books on “Teach yourself Chinese”. It isn’t something I want to do anytime soon.

I didn’t know you were writing a book, I wonder what it’s about and I surely don’t know what an NRG is.

Wishing you well(ness) and peace today.
